What to See When You Visit

For the growing number of people who work in central Maryland, or who are traveling into BWI Airport, the living is easy!

Close to BWI is Arundel Mills Mall, Maryland’s top tourist destination.  The vast number of stores is enhanced by restaurants, movie theaters, several hotels, unique entertainment venues such as Medieval Times, and around Arundel Mills, growing commercial and residential centers round out this growing area.

Three unique museums and historic properties are close to the Airport for visitors to the area:

  • The Benson- Hammond House (Ann Arrundel County Historical Society) is a farmhouse typical for the area prior to the Airport's arrival in 1950.
  • The National Cryptologic Museum is the National Security Agency's gateway for the public.  Over 50,000 visitors a year grow to understand the mission and history of cryptology through this site.
  • The National Electronics Museum encourages the study of science and engineering through a defense electronic heritage and was founded by Westinghouse employees with close ties to today's Northrop Grumman and other local firms and universities.

Or check out the happenings at the Chesapeake Arts Center.

To our south, Annapolis, the state’s incomparable historic capital, can take you back to George Washington’s time.  Located on the Severn River and the beautiful Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis is home to centuries-old quaint shops and restaurants, cobblestoned streets, the Naval Academy, the City Dock, and timeless vistas.  It's also home to the U.S. Naval Academy.  Come Sail Away, the theme of the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau, captures the essence of the Chesapeakde bay area.

Baltimore City’s world famous Inner Harbor, with its shops and restaurants, and the city’s many monuments, museums and attractions, are less than 10 miles away.  Tour historic Fells Point, eat fresh seafood, or take in a game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles, or M & T Bank Stadium, home to the Baltimore Ravens.  The National Aquarium is definitely worth a days visit. Take advantage of the varied opportunities to enjoy a great city!

Just west of the BWI is Howard County, reflecting the rural character that once dominated the region, as well as Columbia, MD.  Ellicott City and historic Savage Mill highlight the history of the county, known for its rankings as a 'Best Place to Live'.
